County of Tripoli. Bohémond IV of Antioch to Bohémond VII, 1187-1287. Bezant (Gold, 24 mm, 3.40 g, 7 h), imitation type, 3rd phase, Tripoli. Imitating a dinar of the Fatimid caliph al-Mustansir Abu Tamim Maʿadd (AH 427-487 / AD 1036-1094). Shiʿa kalima within a central circle, ‘ʿAlī / lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad rasūl Allāh / walī Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Ali is the friend of Allah’ in deteriorated Arabic); four annulets between the circles; in the margin, very crude and deteriorated imitation of ‘Muḥammad rasūl Allāh arsalahū bi al-hudā wa dīn al-ḥaqq liyuẓhirahū ʿalā al-dīn kullih wa law kariha al-mushrikūn’ (‘Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. He sent him with guidance and the religion of truth, so that He may make it overcome all religions, even though the unbelievers may dislike it’ in Arabic). Rev. Within a central circle, ‘Maʿadd’, followed by a deteriorated legend in three lines, imitating ‘al-imām al-Mustanṣir billāh amīr al-muʾminīn’ (‘Imam al-Mustansir billah, Commander of the Believers’ in Arabic); in the margin, a deteriorated and illegible imitation of an Arabic mint and date formula.
